Iatrogenic ureteral injuries are rare but potentially serious complications of surgical procedures. Intraoperative detection is crucial, as delayed diagnosis is associated with increased morbidity, prolonged hospital stays, and reduced quality of life.
Current data as well as European guidelines emphasize the need for increased vigilance, particularly during complex abdominopelvic procedures, such as colorectal surgery, hysterectomies, or endometriosis surgery.
The use of dyes such as indigocarmine to improve visualization of the ureters can help reduce the risk of delayed diagnosis. In addition, continuous medical education of all involved disciplines – urology, gynecology, visceral and vascular surgery – is essential to improve prevention, early detection, and optimal management.
We look forward to your participation!
