Organ transplantation has become a standard surgical procedure in recent years. The hurdles of the past have been overcome and both rejection and mortality/morbidity itself are no longer considered predominant challenges due to the surgical procedure; however, the severe organ shortage for transplantation is a major obstacle. As a result, the waiting time for a suitable transplant is prolonged. The allocation follows the "sickest first" principle, and organ shortages are being addressed with transplantation of grafts derived from donors with expanded criteria, machine perfusion (MP) for better preservation while monitoring graft function, and living organ donation to expand the donor pool.
Surgical techniques have been continuously adapted to ensure optimal safety for today's very sick recipients. In this webinar selected modern techniques of kidney, liver and pancreas transplantation, including living kidney donation and MP of livers, will be explained and demonstrated with video clips.
