The objective of organ transplantation is optimal transplant function. This can be achieved by adequate donor management, the best possible organ protection and minimization of organ damage during implantation. Damage to the transplant can cause disorders of function sometimes amounting to primary organ failure. Because of the current shortage of donor organs these problems are accentuated by the use of transplants which have already suffered some degree of damage ("extended criteria donors").
The preservation of organs for transplantation presents differing demands depending on the function of the organ and its response to the stress of ischemia. The choice of technique for optimal organ preservation is governed by the behavior of the organ during cold ischemia.
In this webinar, we ask the question “What is the surgeon’s view on organ procurement?” Our experts will discuss the applied clinical strategies of procurement of abdominal organs, in detail the nature of organ injury, possible complications and exclusion criteria, and optimal donor procurement, including perfusion and preservation.
We look forward to your participation!
