Cardioplegia is one of the indispensable components of most cardiac operations, and without the concepts that have been practiced and established for decades, the development of cardiac surgery would not have been possible. Today, cardiac surgery has achieved a level of standardization and operative scope that the pioneers of the field in the 1960s and 1970s probably could hardly have imagined.

The concepts of myocardial protection have also evolved over the decades, although this evolution has largely stagnated since the 1990s. Nevertheless, the collective term "cardioplegia" encompasses a cornucopia of solutions that arrest the heart through different mechanisms while simultaneously minimizing ischemia-induced damage.

In clinical practice, various questions arise: How and why do the different cardioplegias work? What are the advantages and disadvantages of one solution versus another? Which concept is more suitable for one operation versus another, and why? And in summary: What is the best strategy, or does such a strategy exist?

This webinar addresses exactly these questions, both from a scientific and particularly from a practical-clinical focus. The physiological foundations at the myocyte level will be explained, thereby clarifying the functional and application methods, and finally the connection will be made to modern and versatile cardiac surgery, where – as much can be anticipated – all of the prominent cardioplegias still find application.

We look forward to your participation!
