The first heart in Vienna was transplanted on 5 March 1984. Since then, almost 2000 life-saving cardiac transplantations (HTX) have been performed at the Medical University of Vienna. Typical diseases that demand HTX are dilatative cardiomyopathy and coronary heart disease, if it is an ischemic cardiomyopathy. Patients in Austria are currently waiting 9 to 12 months for an organ.
Even though HTX is a difficult and complex procedure and demands a highly experienced and trained medicinal staff, the Medical University of Vienna looks back on a record of good postoperative outcome. Early survival was 95%. 7 out of 10 patients live more than 10 years with the new graft.
While unwanted side effects of immune therapy have been reduced, modern methods of patient treatment, and organ preservation have been improved, making Vienna to one of the most successful HTX centers in the world. Professor Andreas Zuckermann will discuss the surgical techniques and perfusion protocols, which help establishing and maintain this successful outcome in his department.
